Antique 19th century Victorian Staffordshire flat back figure of Poodle dog and two puppies
A beautiful hand painted mid to late 19th century Staffordshire flat back figure depicting a mother poodle and her two puppies. The figure, often referred to as a ‘wooly’ due to its textured finish, is held atop a striking cobalt blue painted pedestal base.
Staffordshire flatbacks were affordable earthenware chimney pieces made in the English Potteries from the late 1830s through the late 19th century. Over 100 small, often unnamed factories produced them as affordable folk art for modest country cottages and middle-class Victorian homes. Flatbacks served as a visual chronicle of Victorian popular culture, current events, and local stories, often inspired by newspaper engravings from the Illustrated London News. A striking decorative shelf or mantle display with plentiful amounts of character and charm.
The figure is in a good clean condition being free of any visible faults or defects.
