A striking pair of early 20th century gouache paintings depicting the erupting Mount Vesuvius towering above the bay of Naples.
These dramatic scenes were often produced by naive Neapolitan artists for sale to Grand Tourists who had come to observe the eruption and to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum. The 1906 Mount Vesuvius eruption, known as the "Grand Eruption," began on April 4 and peaked on the night of April 7–8. It was the deadliest Vesuvian eruption of the 20th century, killing over 100 people and displacing thousands. It ejected the largest volume of lava ever recorded from the volcano.
A striking decorative pair of good artistic merit and with an interesting historical subject matter. Both examples are held within period glazed front ornate gold and black frames.
