Near pair of antique Victorian Staffordshire recumbent lion figures atop plinth bases
A beautiful pair of late 19th century hand painted Staffordshire lions in a majestic recumbent position each raised atop a painted plinth base.
Staffordshire figures were affordable earthenware chimney pieces made in the English Potteries from the late 1830s through the late 19th century. Over 100 small, often unnamed factories produced them as affordable folk art for modest country cottages and middle-class Victorian homes. Flatbacks served as a visual chronicle of Victorian popular culture, current events, and local stories, often inspired by newspaper engravings from the Illustrated London News.
A striking decorative shelf or mantle pair with plentiful amounts of character and charm. Both examples are in a good clean condition being free of any visible faults or defects.
