These striking scenes were often produced by naive Neapolitan artists for sale to Grand Tourists who travelled across Europe in search of both pleasure and beauty.
Naples is situated on the Bay of Naples near Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields. The city was founded by ancient Greeks as Parthenope and later refounded as Neapolis around 600 BCE, making it one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities. The sprawling Historic Centre of Naples is filled with Greek-Roman street layouts, medieval churches, and baroque architecture.
