John Piper (1903-1992) ‘Pistyll Cain - North Wales’ framed lithograph
A beautiful original lithograph piece taken from the 1944 poetry anthology English, Scottish and Welsh Landscapes.
Although John Piper (1903–1992) lived his adult life from 1935 at Fawley Bottom in Buckinghamshire, he regularly produced artworks in Wales. In 1934 he had met Myfanwy Evans from a Welsh family from Pembrokeshire, and Pembrokeshire figures in Piper's pre-war artworks. Piper visited Snowdonia during the war, and in 1943, the WAAC commissioned Piper to go to the disused slate mine at Blaenau Ffestiniog where the paintings from the National Gallery had been evacuated for safety during the Blitz. No works were realised of the mine, but he painted the mountains in the area. In this period through to the mid 1950s he rented a number of cottages in the area, including two at Maes Caradog and Pentre, situated in Nant Ffrancon.
The lithograph mounted and framed ready for display.
Measures 28cm x 23cm
