A beautifully charming and well executed miniature oil painting produced on a discarded metal pot lid. The painting depicts a likely Middle Eastern street scene with figures and donkey flanked by buildings, archway and domed temple roof.
Possibly depicting a scene in Jerusalem’s Christian Quarter of The Old City. More specifically The Arch of the Virgin Mary. This Crusader-period arch features distinct decorative carvings. Historically, it served as an ancient eastern gate leading directly into the rotunda of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
The painting is signed by artist Frank Shayler. Frank Hearn Shayler (1867–1954) was a Shrewsbury-based architect, and hobbyist artist, who predominantly worked in an Arts and Crafts architectural style throughout Oxfordshire and Wales.
