Antique Indian brass elephant head jardiniere with ornate scrollwork and animal decoration
A substantial Indian brass jardinière dating from the British Raj period, second half of the 19th century, circa 1870–1890. The vessel is crafted from hand-worked, copper-rich brass sheet and finished with extensive repoussé and engraved decoration.
The surface is animated by layered foliate borders and a continuous figurative frieze of stylised figures, animals and foliage, all executed freehand with punches and chisels. Cast elephant-head ring handles are applied to each side, a distinctive feature of Indian colonial decorative metalwork created for European interiors.
The brass retains a rich, mature patina developed naturally over time, enhancing the relief decoration and overall depth. Jardinières of this size and decorative intensity were intended as interior display pieces and remain highly effective within both traditional and eclectic settings.
