Antique Chinese 18th century shipwrecked earthenware vessel with loop handle, spout and incised decoration
A beautiful mid to late 18th century earthenware pottery jar with dipped yellow glaze, multi hoop handles, spout and simple incised decoration.
These vases, likely originating from the Fujian or Guangdong province, have been used since the early Song Dynasty for domestic use as well as export. The vessels were used to transport oil and other commercial goods across China and for international export.
These primitive and utilitarian jars are characterised with their simple nature, being unrefined and rustic, devoid of excessive decoration.
Both the interior and the exterior base have natural marine encrustations throughout. Thus, this specific example shows signs of prolonged sea water submersion suggesting the vessel was likely part of a shipwrecked cargo.
A beautiful decorative piece having a simple and rustic charm. The vase does have historic damage with one of the loop handles missing.
