Antique 19th century Chinese hand painted red lacquer presentation box with gold gilt & carved decoration
A truly exceptional mid to late 19th century Chinese lacquered box of unusual octagonal form. This outstanding piece having exceptional hand painted gold gilt decoration throughout in the form of floral displays, immortals, mythical animals and Geishas. The top of the box has a well carved immortal decoration with the base having a wonderfully carved repeating mythical beast and claw finish.
A piece of such outstanding quality likely gifted as a presentation piece or wedding box to the upper echelons of Chinese society.
Chinese lacquerware during the Qing dynasty (1644–1912) reflected some of the finest technical and artistic achievements in the tradition. Imperial workshops, especially under the Qianlong Emperor, produced elaborately carved pieces featuring dragons, floral scrolls, and auspicious symbols. Built up through the careful application of many lacquer layers, often tinted with cinnabar, these works combined deep craftsmanship with a highly decorative style.
