AESTHETIC MOVEMENT BAMBOO & LACQUER MAGAZINE RACK

£325.00

Antique 19th century Aesthetic Movement painted bamboo lacquered magazine rack canterbury

An exceptional Anglo-Japanese Victorian late 19th century bamboo canterbury example having a solid painted bamboo frame with a wonderful collection of hand painted lacquer panelling. Each panel beautifully hand painted with a stylish bird, floral and foliage scene.

The Aesthetic Movement in Britain (circa 1860–1890) championed "art for art's sake" and heavily promoted the Japanese-influenced Anglo-Japanese style. Bamboo became the ultimate symbol of this exotic aesthetic, used to craft lightweight, asymmetric, and unpretentious furniture pieces that broke away from heavy Victorian designs.

An undoubtably stylish piece that displays exceptional craftsmanship and skill throughout. The piece is in a wonderful condition and still retains its metal finial decoration to the frame and feet.
