Exceptional 17th century silk tapestry and stumpwork tray with religious and naturalistic themes
A beautiful and important piece dating to the early 17th century. With its strong religious themes throughout the piece was likely intended as a tray for a religious vestment such as a collar or gloves.
The tray, made of papier mache, has a striking central image of an angel holding a fallen Christ under a crucifix with angels watching down from the sun and clouds above. The scene set within a beautiful forest with dragon fly, butterfly and floral foliage surround.
The border, divided into eight separate sections, has an assortment of religious imagery to include cherubs, garments and a ladder. The latter likely symbolising the stairway to heaven.
An important historical piece that displays exceptional craftsmanship and skill.
The tray undoubtedly created for a person of prominence and high importance during the period.
